Fall is here, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and you know what that means: we have a compelling urge to buy oddly shaped and freakish looking gourds from the farmer’s market. Sure, it sounds like a good move. But what do we do with them when we get home? Here’s a quick idea: use them in a fall basket that not only looks great, but in my case, covers up an ugly looking wire cord and plug for a lamp. Win-win! Just grab a basket you aren’t using, stick a few fall sprigs in side it, and tuck the gourds in where you see fit. The beauty of it is that it doesn’t have to be perfect; the colors along make it visually appealing. And at the very least, people’s eyes will be so drawn to your weird and useless vegetables sticking out that they won’t notice if the arrangement is a bit messy. Read on for the DIY.
*one basket, any size
* a few foam blocks, to fill the bottom of the basket and have something to stick the floral pieces into (if you don’t have the blocks, use some newspaper or other filler you have
*some funky looking gourds
*fall sprigs: go to a nearby craft store and pick out what you like. Just to give you a breakdown of what you see here, the green in the back of the basket is actually a single bunch, as are the sunflowers in the bottom right. The orange berry sprigs are two separate pieces.
Directions: Lay the foam blocks or filler of your choice in the bottom of the basket. (The amount will vary, based on the depth of the basket and how high you want the arrangement to sit.) Once that is done you can begin adding your floral pieces, sticking them into your base filler. *Tip: when arranging, start with the back part first to give it some height and then build forward from there. I tend to add the back, then the very front, then fill in the middle and play around as I see fit until I’m happy with it.* Lastly, tuck a few of those gourds into the basket, and scatter any leftover gourds around the base of the basket, as shown here. This is underneath a console table, but it can go on top of a console table, on a bench, or even as a centerpiece. It’s quick, easy, and looks great. And at the very least, you gave those rock hard veggies a job to do before dumping them after the holidays.
